Can Posture Make You More Attractive?

April 12th, 2010 | Posted in blog home, home page

Some well-meaning adults may have told you more than once to sit up or stand up straight to make a nice impression and they were right.  Then, they went about telling you how to sit and stand, and did a lot of harm!  Read this article and find out how to stand and sit correctly.  If you stand and sit well, you will become more attractive and avoid damaging your spine.

Our past presidents understood the power of posture.  The most charismatic ones developed a presence that electrified rooms when they entered.  They appeared larger than life because of the way they stood and moved.  They attracted people because the way they moved, told the world they had a special quality.

Two examples of how posture communicates to the world our identity are former Presidents Clinton and Nixon.  Clinton’s posture is impeccable.  Even when his presidency was under siege and threatened by scandal, he seemed poised.  When Nixon was challenged however, he could not help but show the world how distressed he was.  He cowered and every movement and gesture revealed resentment toward anyone who questioned him.  He kept his shoulders hunched up and looked uneasy. In the end Clinton lost little, and Nixon, everything.

Posture is that powerful. Like a magnet it can attract or repel.  Here are some do’s and don’ts to create a dynamic image that people will find themselves attracted to.

Recent studies of the lower back show that workers who sit leaning back, actually have healthier spines.  It seems that sitting upright puts great stress on the discs that separate the vertebrae of the lower back.  A good compromise is to use a lumbar support cushion like the ones chiropractors recommend.  Use a back support cushion to sit up straight, to make a great impression and protect the discs that are prone to damage through sedentary lifestyles.

Your Mom Was Wrong!

If your mother told you to hold your shoulders back and stick your chest out, she was very wrong.  This distorts the spine and causes the muscles on both sides of the middle back to develop knots.  Scientists and doctors call these knots “trigger points.”  Habitually tightened muscles create pain as they force vertebrae of the spine out of alignment.  Many people push their shoulders so far back they look pretentious.  If you were told to stick your chest out, don’t!  Let your shoulders hang like two wet overcoats on hooks.  Relax, and draw your head slightly back as you lift your chin about a quarter of an inch. If you’re unsure you’re doing this right, ask your chiropractor.  Chiropractors are experts in body mechanics and posture.  A little coaching from a doctor of chiropractic can have you looking and feeling much better.

Everyday at my center I work with clients on their posture and in seconds I can enhance their impact on others.  Just a slight shift in the head or shoulders will change how the world treats that person.  People judge us by what they see and treat us accordingly.

If you are at all concerned about the impression you’re making on people, or wonder if you’re standing or sitting correctly, call a local doctor of chiropractic and schedule a “postural analysis.”                                                                                                          c 2010
