P1000398If you train with people who are as good as you are, you will progress slowly. If you train with people who are slower or weaker than you, you will become slower and weaker.  If you can put your ego aside and train with people who you know are fitter than you are, you will get stronger.  Always train with the best you can find.

I’m 55 years old and bicycle with people half my age.  They seem to love leaving me behind.  They find great satisfaction accelerating faster and faster up impossible hills, until I can’t take anymore.  If I’m lucky, they’ll be forced to stop for a light and give me a chance to catch up.  This can go on for three or four hours!

After the work out I’m sore.  I always feel I’ve ridden harder than the others. I know if I stick with it, I’ll get very fit.  My results will be excellent, because I’ve trained harder.  I realize I may never catch up to them, as they have an age advantage. I’ll stick with it, because it’s great training for me.

Training alone is always an option, but if you’re like most, you won’t train as hard as you would in a group.  Who are you training with?  I challenge you to find people who are stronger than you to train with.  Decide to train with them up to three times a week and watch how you jump to a new level of fitness. This works with any sport.  As hard as it may be, find people who are better than you and train with them.  Try to stay with them regardless how difficult it may seem.  It’s all right if they leave you behind.  Over time, you’ll get super fit.
