The causes of knee injuries are mostly obvious and fairly common. They include slips, falls, jerks, sports injuries, direct trauma, twisting injuries, work-related kneeling injuries, sprains, and strains. As the knee is the largest joint in the body, it is well supported by various ligaments, tendons, and muscles. A cartilage or meniscus allows the knee joint to glide easily and supports the joint on the inner and outer parts. Obviously any structure of the knee can be involved in injuries.

At Care Chiropractic, we offer safe, gentle, and effective care for the knee. Many skiers travel from mountain resorts just to receive the specialized care we provide. Gentle adjustments to the knee realign the various structures and allow the body to heal itself naturally.

The most frequent cause of headaches is from imbalances in the neck. When bones lose their proper orientation due to previous trauma, sleeping incorrectly, toxins in the environment, or stress, they cause nerve interference. Bones out of place or spinal subluxations lead to headaches and many other problems. Left uncared for these conditions tend to get worse and can cause more serious dis-ease.

What Can I do To Help Myself?

Chronic headache sufferers have lots of options in preventing headaches: eliminate certain foods like red wine, hard cheeses, M.S.G., aspartame, and artificial sweeteners. Relaxation, exercise, avoiding unnecessary medication, getting proper rest, stretching programs, and use of a special neck pillow can also help.

It’s Still Bothering Me, Now What?

We’ve helped thousands of people with headaches over many years. We’ve noticed consistently when the spine is in proper alignment, most people simply don’t have headache. If the spine is even slightly misaligned, especially at the base of the skull, people struggle and can have serious debilitating pain.

Chronic back pain is one of the most common complaints from patients and can be completely debilitating if not treated properly. 50 billion dollars is spent annually on the treatment of back pain in this country. The chronic variety, is the most dangerous. It is defined as pain that lasts longer than three months. It is not a constant pain, but it’s always there and can cause pain with the slightest movement.

Chronic pain comes from Injuries to the spine that don’t heal completely, as well as from long-term diseases. There are two types of pain most commonly identified with back pain:

Neuropathic pain – This happens when nerve tissue is injured. Sharp stabbing pains or burning sensations are usually associated with this type of injury. Examples of this are pinched nerves and herniated disks.

Nociceptive pain – This is caused by damage outside of the nervous system. A constant ache or pain is most commonly associated with this.

Chronic back pain is usually found in adults between the ages of 30 to 50. The frequency of spinal degeneration and disc disease, (both of which cause chronic pain), increase with age.

This type of injury can be a life changing experience. Daily routines, or chores that are normally taken for granted and completed without effort, become exercises in pain and frustration. Simply getting out of bed in the morning, or bending to pick up the paper can become a monumental task.

Prescription medicine has become common for those who suffer from this injury, but neither it, nor standard medical procedures do anything but mask the pain. Temporary relief may be found, but the pain will return at some point and the injury can cause depression. Studies have shown that depression is nearly four times more likely in people who suffer from chronic back pain.

Doctors of Chiropractic, like Dr. Visentin, use different techniques and have various theories of pain; some using modern explanations from neurology and orthopedics, while others apply Palmer’s theory of “subluxation”. All chiropractors use spinal adjustments for the treatment of pain though. In the treatment of chronic pain that affects the nervous system, chiropractic has proven to be extremely effective. It also helps re-introduce normal function back to the muscles, joints and vascular system. This helps eliminate the root causes of chronic pain instead of masking it.

Dr. Visentin, D.C. supplements the treatment of chronic pain with other therapies, such as massage and ice. Nutrition and a regimen of vitamins, minerals and other supplements may also be suggested to enhance results.

An October 2005 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), showed that the cost of both chiropractic and medical care for treating chronic low-back pain are virtually the same. Chiropractic care did produce better results though.

2,780 chronic low-back patients received treatment from 111 medical doctors and 60 chiropractors. The chiropractic treatment results showed higher pain relief and satisfaction with care, as well as lower disability scores than from medical care.

While there have been several studies internationally that have showed similar results, this was the first comparison within the structure of the American health care system.

Chiropractic is extremely effective for chronic pain. There is no dangerous surgery, high-cost treatment and no drug side effects. Patients dealing with this issue may find chiropractic just the right care for long term pain management, and perhaps even the elimination of pain.

I was trying to explain chiropractic to a 5 year old, with little success. It’s different from medicine and occasionally meets with resistance. It’s based on the principle that the body is a self-healing organism. Our bodies can heal themselves best when they are in good alignment. Chiropractors work with the inborn mechanisms of repair. They do this by balancing the spine and taking pressure off the nervous system. Obviously, this is too much information for a five year old.

I simply told him, “There’s a doctor inside you that knows everything about you and can heal you.” He was appalled and exclaimed, “a doctor inside of me?” I reassured him this was true, but obviously he was not fond of metaphors.

I had to win him over, because he wouldn’t let me check his spine. Children are extracted from the birth canal by their heads and necks with forces that vary from 60-90 lbs. They fall about 3,500 times just learning to walk. They are very active, and should have their spines checked regularly to avoid serious problems later on in life.

He was afraid of doctors. He had been poked and injected by ordinary doctors his whole life and wouldn’t let me touch him. I finally offered him a wrist bracelet, which he promptly refused. I left it in front of him saying, “If you change your mind, it’s yours.” As I walked away I heard him whisper to his mom, “I’m not going to change my mind.”

Some weeks later, after helping his older brother with bedwetting and hyperactivity disorder, he decided on his own, to get his spine checked. I work in a large room with many tables. While I was working on several adult patients, he climbed onto one of the tables. He rubbed his back with both hands and cried out as if he was in excruciating pain. Of course, he just wanted my attention.

Finally, I checked his spine, which was perfect. I told his mom, “Your son has unlimited potential.” He overheard me and jumped off the table with excitement. He ran to his Dad with the news. He wasn’t sure what it meant, but he was quick to announce loud enough for the whole clinic to hear, “I hab unlibited potenzel!”

When the spine is in good alignment, you stand your best chance of being and staying healthy. Power, life, and healing forces surge form your brain through the spinal cord to control and coordinate the various organs. Your body has a tremendous potential to heal itself when your spine is straight and there is no interference with the nervous system.

Medicine assumes something is terribly wrong with you. Ordinary doctors do lots of tests to diagnose a problem. Then, they use drugs to cover it up. Failing that, they try to chop out the problem with surgery.

Chiropractic is totally different. The chiropractor assumes there is a lot more right with you, than wrong with you. The doctor of chiropractic works with the miracle healing systems that you were born with. With chiropractic, it’s possible to become so healthy, you don’t get sick in the first place.

Get your spine checked. You’ll reach your potential, only if your spine is straight. See a doctor of chiropractic and achieve a balance from within. This is the best way to be and stay healthy.

How Does This Happen?

The largest nerve in the body called the sciatic nerve runs from the back of the hips to the leg. Irritation of the sciatic nerve is called “sciatica”. It can be caused by misalignments of the lower back, misalignments of the pelvis, narrowing of the spinal canal, spinal discal conditions, vertebral slippage, and pregnancy. Conditions that can make sciatica worse include, overweight, lack of exercise, high heels, and improper sleep surfaces.

What Can I do To Help Myself?

Thick wallets can contribute to sciatica. Move your wallet from the back to the front pocket. Many times avoiding sitting can help relieve sciatic pain. Try standing or lying down. Ice can be helpful as well. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Use a wet towel and apply ice up to twenty minutes, three times daily.

It’s Still Bothering Me, Now What?

Rooting out the cause of sciatica is the best way to achieve long-term relief. Correcting the alignment of the lower back and pelvis is the most important factor in nearly every case of sciatica. Over time, this relieves painful pressure on the nerve and allows the body to heal itself in the end.

A subluxation is when one of the bones in your spine is out of place and irritates (pinches) a nerve. This can cause pain, spasm, numbness, and loss of health. It’s serious.

2. WHY SO MANY VISITS?

The goal of our treatment is to get you better by correcting subluxations (bones irritating nerves). I work at realigning the bones by training the muscles and ligaments to support the bones in their normal position, thus removing the subluxation and allowing your body the opportunity to heal itself. Many factors contribute to the total time needed to accomplish this task. Injuries, time, age, STRESS, and overall health will affect the way your body is able to properly heal.

Remember that many times while we are correcting your subluxations the stresses that caused or contributed to them may still be present in your life. This makes it necessary to be seen frequently at the beginning, then as your body heals PROPERLY you do not need to be seen as often.

3. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN I AM COMPLETELY HEALED?

The frequency of care is reduced or care is ended when clinical test findings, neurological and orthopedic exams, x-ray findings and leg length readings indicate that the vertebral subluxation complex (bone pinching nerves) has been reduced, stabilized (holding), or corrected.

4. AM I “FIXED” WHEN THE PAIN IS GONE?

NO! I expect you to feel less pain within the first two to three weeks of treatment. Your body has not had the opportunity to properly heal itself in that time, and you are very susceptible to re-injury and reoccurrence of the original problem if treatment is discontinued. Be sure to complete your recommended treatment schedule to ensure your return to optimal health.

5. I FEEL WORSE; HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS IS WORKING?

In the process of correcting your subluxation, it is normal to experience some discomfort and soreness at the beginning. Typically, the pain is gone in about one to two weeks. Exceptions may occur, especially in the more severe cases or when there is trauma involved. Changing the architecture of the spine to make it better will cause some soreness as the muscles and ligaments heal properly. The following will best illustrate the idea:

If you had a splinter in your arm and left it there for five years, and then after five years you decide to remove the splinter, would it hurt as badly as the day you received the splinter, or would it be pain free? The same is true with resolving subluxations. It takes time to heal, and sometimes it is sore.

6. WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND 80 VISITS, WHEN MY INSURANCE WILL ONLY PAY FOR 12 VISITS?

Insurance companies look to get you out of acute pain situations. This generally happens after the first three weeks or twelve visits. I call this type of care a “patch” because it does not correct the problem (subluxation) on a long-term basis. The option I offer you is reconstructive care, which takes more time and is more complete. I work at changing the structure of the muscles and ligaments to hold your spine in the correct position. By restoring your spine to its normal position, it is inherently stronger and able to heal properly and completely.

7. IS THERE MORE TO CHIROPRACTIC THAN LOW BACK PAIN AND WHIPLASH INJURIES?

YES! Here are some of the conditions that respond very well to chiropractic treatment:

Headaches Asthma

Migraines Nausea

Numbness in hands/feet Neck pain

Shoulder problems Shortness of breath

Knee problems Foot pain

Poor circulation Heartburn

Children’s spinal problems (scoliosis)

Carpal tunnel syndrome

8. WHY IS IT WHEN PEOPLE START GOING TO CHIROPRACTORS, THEY CAN NEVER STOP GOING?

MY HUSBAND WON’T START BECAUSE HE “DOESN’T WANT TO GET HOOKED.”

When I was in a teaching clinic in Chicago, a patient asked me the same question-then answered it herself. She informed me that because of chiropractic care, she knows what it is like to feel good. She told me how the stresses in her everyday life add up until she starts to feel bad again. Because she prefers feeling better, she continued to come in and receive maintenance care.

9. WHY WOULD MY MEDICAL DOCTOR BE DEAD SET AGAINST ME GOING TO A CHIROPRACTOR?

That is a very good question, considering the fact that he should be as concerned about your health as I am. Some people are afraid of what they do not understand, and this may well be the case. Others have been misinformed and have serious concerns about chiropractic. Unfortunately, there are a few that see me as competition, and this is very grievous because my main concern is restoring your health.

Most medical Doctors see Chiropractors, or at least refer their patients to Chiropractors. Question your Medical Doctor as to his motives-why he does not want you to see a Chiropractor-then decide what YOU want to do to restore your health.

What Can I do To Help Myself?

Usually ice is advisable. A classic home therapy involves the anagram R.I.C.E.

R – Rest
I – Ice 5 – 20 minutes, three times per day
C – Compression, ace bandage is fine
E – Elevate above the heart

This treatment, is the so-called R.I.C.E. therapy. Of course, caution should be used in using ice. Never place ice directly on the skin. Use a wet towel or ace bandage in this case. While compressing the appendage, good circulation must be maintained.

It’s Still Bothering Me, Now What?

Adjustments or realignment of the various joints and structures of the arms and legs is a wonderful way to address most injuries. Adjustment means to gently re-align the body using the hands or an instrument. This care is safe and suitable for people of all ages and, with most conditions, including pregnancy and arthritic conditions.

How do people become accident-prone? Is it just misfortune or, could there be a reason why certain people suffer accident after accident, through no apparent fault of their own?

Mild brain injuries from even low speed accidents are extremely common and often go undiagnosed by doctors. The brain is an especially fragile organ and when it’s shaken due to an accident, important delicate pathways break down. Scientists know, that this can occur at low speeds and adversely affect the way we think, feel, and act. These changes are so subtle, that even sophisticated medical devices may not detect them!

How do people become accident-prone? During the first accident they may have suffered a brain injury they are unaware of. They continue driving, and because this is a complex task, they make mistakes. They make poor choices, due to mild damage they’re unaware of. As a specialist in accident related injuries, I’ve had people come to me after experiencing three accidents in just two months. This has happened so many times, I know it’s not “bad luck”. It’s poor driving, due to brain injuries from a previous accident(s).

All too often, doctors miss these brain injuries. Ironically, these injuries may not escape notice by close friends and relatives. They may notice changes of behavior, mood swings, forgetfulness, and irritability that medical professionals miss. If you suspect something is wrong with a spouse, or friend, drive them to our clinic to see what can be done to help them. They may have a mild brain injury due to a previous accident, causing them to be accident-prone.

Chiropractic and medicine are completely different. Medicine supposes there is something wrong with you. Their focus is to find out what’s wrong and either chop it out surgically, or cover the problem with drugs.

The chiropractor assumes there is a lot more right with you, than wrong. He knows the body can heal itself, and works so that this happens naturally.

You probably know, or have already guessed I am a chiropractor. I know that even if there was something “wrong” with you, that your body is so well designed it has the potential to heal itself.

Do you believe your body has self-healing qualities?

Do you believe you can heal yourself?

Most people already accept these questions as facts. We couldn’t live one day if it weren’t for these inherent self-healing capabilities.

Imagine. Inside each of us, moment, by moment, sick cells are being replaced by healthy ones. This constant process occurs automatically, and is guided primarily by the nervous system. Unless there is interference with the nervous system, your body will keep you as healthy as you were meant to be. Much like a computer network, your spine and nervous system control everything inside you and do a very good job of keeping you well.

So, why do we get sick?

How come there are so many sick people around us?

We get sick when bones move out of alignment and create interference with the delicate nervous system. This can happen due to slips, jerks, jolts, exertion, etc. and is the most frequent cause of disease today. We can stay healthy by getting adjusted, or having a doctor of chiropractic gently realign our spines. This removes pressure from the nerves so that life, love, energy, and healing forces, roar through us without interference.

The brain generates energy and sends messages that move from the brain down, through the spine, and out to the various organs of the body. Tiny electric impulses move throughout the body to orchestrate a symphony of life and health within.

How can we stay healthy over a lifetime?

Get checked by a specialist in the spine and nervous system. Work with the healing systems you were born with. There is more right with you, than wrong with you. Decide to work with “that something”, inside of you that’s everything. The power that flows life itself over the delicate nerves can sustain you. Decide to be and stay healthy naturally, over your lifetime. Get busy staying well! See a chiropractor, get your power “turned on” and keep it on.
